Jesus Soto

Groundbreaking works by key Venezuelan kinetic artist Jesús Soto come to NYU

Soto: Paris and Beyond, 1950–1970

The first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Jesús Soto to be held at a New York museum in more than 35 years, Soto: Paris and Beyond, 1950–1970 will be on view at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery from January 10 through March 31, 2012. Curated by Estrellita B. Brodsky and comprising a focused selection of approximately 50 works, the exhibition highlights this major Venezuelan artist’s early career, after he moved from Caracas to Paris in 1950. Soto: Paris and Beyond offers a rare opportunity to trace Soto’s visionary trajectory as well as his reciprocal influence and exchange with other members of the avant-garde. The artist’s groundbreaking achievements in the fields of perception and interactive art established his reputation as both a primary proponent of kinetic art internationally and one of the most influential Latin American artists of the 20th century.

Drawing inspiration from optics, music theory, and phenomenology, Jesús Soto (1923–2005) invented a radically new relationship between the artwork and the viewer.

Latin American Art is hot in Paris !

Over the years, Europe has always been a second home for latin american artists and still nowadays great initiatives take place contributing to the growing interest for these artists. Here’s a selection of some of them in Paris :

ARTE-SUR.ORG

Arte-sur.org is the first european website, published in english and spanish about Contemporary art in Latin america. It has had a very sucessful launch in Paris at the Centre Pompidou, which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe.

After travelling across South America, Albertine de Galbert founded arte-sur.org, that links artists, galleries, curators and recent exhibits.

It is an informative tool and is addressed to professionals of the art world, to collectors, but also to amateurs. Looking for information about an artist or an interesting exhibit during your travel ? Log in to arte-sur.org

CENTRE POMPIDOU

The Centre Pompidou, in Paris, has  created a group ‘ America Latina’  to support the arts, exchange between collectors, curators etc travel to different biennales across Latin American and eventually purchase works of art in the Latin American Art field.

The museum already has a dynamic ‘center for research and globalisation’ focused on ongoing developments in the field of Latin American art.

SAM Art Projects

SAM Art Projects, the acronym of Sandra and Amaury Mulliez, is a patron of the arts project that was created in April 2009, in Paris. It promotes and  defends ‘emerging’ artists from Latin American and throughout the world. But also french artists seeking for a project  in an ‘emerging’ country. Therefore it encourages artistic forms that stimulate plastic and visual contemporary creation  between europe at large and the ‘emerging’ countries.  Between North and South. SAM seeks to put in place a dialogue between, artists, collectors and the public at large. The project has therefore created two actions : a prize is attribued by a committee of reknown curators, museum directors and two residencies are attributed every year to the winning artist. There is also a production of an exhibit, a publication for each of these 3 laureates.

BIENNALE

European fairs, biennales now look actively at Latin American art and within the last year it has been honored at major events such as the Istanbul biennale (curators from Brazil and Costa Rica), Lyon biennale (Argentinian curator Victoria Noorthoorn), Pinta London, Arco…

Biennale de Lyon « Une terrible beauté est née » was curated this year by Argentinian Victoria Noorthoorn and represented a large part of Latin American artists (such as Jorge Macchi, Laura Lima, Nicolas Paris, Arthur Bispo do Rosario etc)
